At Coquitlam Public Library, we’re always working hard to offer you the best digital content possible—while also ensuring our resources are sustainable and accessible to everyone.
One of our most popular services is Hoopla, and we’re thrilled that so many of you are enjoying the movies, TV shows, music, eBooks, and audiobooks it offers. However, due to how Hoopla operates, we’re making a small change starting next month to help keep this service available for the long run.
What’s Changing?
Beginning June 1, 2025, each Hoopla user will be able to borrow up to 5 titles per month.
You may also notice that some titles you’ve borrowed in the past are no longer available. We’ve refined our Hoopla collection to focus more on the most popular and in-demand content. High-cost content that has been removed from Hoopla may still be available on Libby by Overdrive.
We understand this might be disappointing to some users. But don’t worry—many of the titles you’re looking for may still be available through Libby by OverDrive or in our physical collection. Be sure to search our catalogue or suggest a purchase if there’s something you can’t find—we’d love to hear from you!
FAQs: You Asked, We Answered
1. Why are we making these changes?
Hoopla operates on a pay-per-use model, meaning the Library pays for each item borrowed. This makes budgeting tricky, as costs vary widely based on title and format. The rising demand has outpaced our digital collections budget—even after increasing it each year. These changes help ensure we can continue offering great digital resources without compromising access to other services.
2. Why has the number of monthly borrows decreased?
Because Hoopla charges the Library for every checkout (and those costs can really add up!), we’ve set a monthly borrowing limit of 5 titles. This helps us stay within budget and continue offering a wide variety of digital services.
3. Why is a title I’ve borrowed before no longer available?
To keep Hoopla sustainable, we’ve updated our collection focus to prioritize high-demand content. Some titles may no longer be available through Hoopla but might still be found in our catalogue. If there’s a title you think we should reconsider for digital access, feel free to suggest a purchase, or speak to a staff member—we’re always open to feedback.
